This is one of the most common questions beginners ask, and it's a great one. While the terms are often used interchangeably, there are real historical and stylistic differences between Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). Understanding where each one comes from helps you appreciate why BJJ looks and feels the way it does on the mat.
Traditional Jiu Jitsu — the origin
Jiu Jitsu (also written as Jujutsu or Jujitsu) originated in Japan as a battlefield martial art used by samurai warriors. It included a wide range of techniques: throws, joint locks, chokes, and even strikes. The aim was to incapacitate an armoured opponent, often when weapons were unavailable. Over centuries it evolved into a civilian self-defence system practised in hundreds of different styles (ryū).
The birth of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
In the early 20th century, Judo founder Mitsuyo Maeda — a student of Jigoro Kano's Kodokan Judo, which was itself heavily influenced by traditional Jiu Jitsu — emigrated to Brazil. He taught the Gracie family, and over decades the Gracies refined and evolved the art, placing enormous emphasis on ground fighting, positional control, and submissions. That evolved system became Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
The key differences
Traditional Jiu Jitsu is broader — it often includes strikes, weapon defences, and standing techniques. BJJ narrows the focus dramatically: it's almost entirely about what happens once both fighters are on the ground. BJJ has also been competition-tested and refined through thousands of matches and MMA fights, which has sharpened its effectiveness enormously.
What most academies teach today
When someone says "Jiu Jitsu" in a modern context - at your local academy or in an online search - they almost always mean BJJ. It's the dominant, globally-practised form. From white belt to black belt, the BJJ journey is structured, rewarding, and endlessly deep.
